Project Overview

MORPHEUS is a Horizon Europe research and innovation project developing a new generation of flexible, biocompatible and sustainable sensing technologies for healthcare and environmental monitoring.

At the heart of the project is an innovative wearable patch with a modular plug-and-sense architecture, designed to integrate interchangeable sensor cartridges for continuous monitoring of physiological, biochemical and environmental parameters.

Rather than replacing an entire monitoring device when different sensing capabilities are required, MORPHEUS is developing a modular system in which individual sensing functions can be added or replaced. This approach combines advanced materials, flexible electronics and sustainable design to enable more adaptable and resource-efficient monitoring technologies.

The project brings together expertise spanning 2D materials, hydrogels, flexible electronics, energy storage, wireless communication, healthcare, clinical validation and standardisation, creating an interdisciplinary pathway from advanced materials research to real-world healthcare applications.

Our Role & Contribution

INNOVA participates in MORPHEUS as an Italian consortium partner, contributing its innovation-oriented expertise within a multidisciplinary European partnership working at the intersection of advanced materials, flexible electronics and healthcare technologies.

INNOVA’s participation supports the project’s broader ambition of moving innovative scientific and technological results towards practical application, impact and future uptake.

The Challenge

Healthcare increasingly requires continuous, accurate and unobtrusive monitoring of patients and their surroundings, particularly in hospitals, clinics and long-term care facilities.

Conventional monitoring technologies can be rigid, single-purpose or dependent on disposable components. This can limit adaptability while increasing material consumption and electronic waste.

At the same time, integrating multiple sensing capabilities into a flexible wearable platform presents significant technological challenges involving biocompatibility, materials performance, power supply, wireless communication, safety, clinical validation and standardisation.

MORPHEUS addresses these challenges by developing a modular sensing platform designed around flexibility, adaptability and sustainability.

Project Overview

DIVERSIFY4Future is a Horizon Europe Innovation Action working to accelerate the transition towards more sustainable, circular and climate-resilient European aquaculture.

The project focuses on diversifying aquaculture through low-trophic species, organic aquaculture, integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA), and aquaponic–polyculture systems. These approaches aim to make better use of nutrients and natural resources, reduce environmental impacts and support the development of sustainable and competitive “blue food” value chains.

DIVERSIFY4Future brings together 33 organisations and associations, including universities, marine research institutes, SMEs, aquaculture producers, technology providers and policy and communication experts.

By combining scientific research with real-world demonstration, socio-economic analysis, consumer engagement and market uptake activities, the project aims to translate innovative aquaculture solutions into practical opportunities for producers, SMEs, policymakers and European regions.

Our Role & Contribution

INNOVA participates in DIVERSIFY4Future as an Italian project partner, contributing its experience in European research and innovation projects and supporting the consortium in translating project knowledge and innovation into wider impact.

DIVERSIFY4Future addresses this challenge by demonstrating how aquaculture can become more diverse, resource-efficient and circular while maintaining high standards of animal welfare, product quality and economic viability.

LEADERSHIP4SMEs was a European initiative designed to help disruptive SMEs and start-ups strengthen, manage, and leverage their Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) as a strategic driver for sustainable hypergrowth within the European Single Market and beyond.

The project aimed to transform how SMEs, start-ups, investors, and financial intermediaries perceived intellectual property, shifting IPR from a purely legal asset to a strategic business and innovation tool capable of accelerating market growth, investment readiness, and international competitiveness.

The initiative developed a comprehensive support ecosystem that combined:

  • IPR management strategies,
  • business acceleration methodologies,
  • innovation support services,
  • investment readiness tools,
  • and technology commercialization approaches.

Through the project, best practices in intellectual property management, innovation strategy, and business development were collected and transformed into practical tools and modular services supporting high-potential European SMEs and start-ups.

A dedicated digital platform and marketplace were also developed to connect companies with qualified experts, investors, innovation service providers, and technology transfer stakeholders.

The framework ultimately supported selected SMEs and start-ups in exploiting their intellectual property assets to:

Project Overview

PREDICTUS is an industrial research and innovation project focused on the evolution of the KNOW4I platform from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 to TRL 8. The project aims to enhance predictive maintenance capabilities in industrial environments through the integration of advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), real-time data acquisition systems, and interoperable industrial communication frameworks.

The project is centred around the deployment and validation of the KNOW4I platform within real operational environments. Through the integration of industrial sensors, PLCs, ERP systems, and FIWARE-based interoperability services, PREDICTUS aims to deliver a scalable and production-ready predictive maintenance platform capable of supporting smart manufacturing environments.

The project combines expertise in industrial systems integration, AI-driven predictive analytics, data interoperability, and operational validation to ensure that KNOW4I can be effectively adopted in real industrial contexts.

Our Role & Contribution

At INNOVA, we contribute to PREDICTUS by ensuring that the evolution of the KNOW4I platform is guided by clear operational requirements, real industrial needs, and a structured validation pathway towards TRL 8.

Within the project, INNOVA leads activities dedicated to updating the technical and functional requirements of the KNOW4I platform and to defining the industrial case study that will support its validation in a real operational environment. This includes analysing the current TRL 6 prototype, identifying the additional requirements needed to reach TRL 8, and translating them into clear specifications for the next development phases.

A central part of our work is the definition of the case study in which KNOW4I will be tested. In this context, INNOVA supports the identification of relevant production processes, critical equipment, data sources and operational constraints, helping to establish the baseline for testing and validating the upgraded platform.

Our contribution includes:

  • Coordinating the definition of the industrial case study for the validation of KNOW4I at TRL 8;
  • Supporting the review of the platform architecture, ensuring that the technical evolution remains aligned with the updated requirements and industrial use case;
  • Contributing to the identification of relevant data inputs, predictive indicators and performance measures for the machine learning models;
  • Supporting data management, data quality analysis and the configuration of data collection processes from industrial systems, sensors, PLCs and ERP environments;
  • Assisting testing and validation activities, including performance assessment and verification of the platform against the operational requirements defined during the project;

Through its experience in innovation management, technology transfer, software-based innovation and research project coordination, INNOVA helps ensure that the development of KNOW4I is consistent with real industrial needs and ready for future deployment in smart manufacturing environments.

The Challenge

Industrial manufacturing environments face several challenges related to predictive maintenance and smart system integration, including:

  • Fragmented industrial data sources distributed across PLCs, sensors, ERP systems, and legacy infrastructures

PREDICTUS addresses these challenges by developing an interoperable predictive maintenance platform capable of integrating heterogeneous industrial data sources and applying advanced machine learning techniques to improve operational efficiency and reduce downtime.

CTApp: Teaching Students Computational Thinking Through a Mobile Application

Project Overview

CTApp was an Erasmus+ funded educational innovation project focused on enhancing students’ computational thinking skills through an interactive mobile application and serious gaming methodologies. The initiative aimed to support schools, educators, and students by introducing innovative digital learning tools capable of improving problem-solving, logical reasoning, and analytical thinking abilities.

The project addressed the growing need for computational thinking competencies among younger generations, recognizing that many students struggle to solve unfamiliar problems despite performing well in routine exercises. Through gamified learning experiences and interactive educational scenarios, CTApp promoted learning-by-doing methodologies that actively engage students in decision-making and problem-solving activities.

The project combined:

  • educational research,
  • digital learning innovation,
  • serious gaming methodologies,
  • teacher capacity building,
  • student engagement activities,
  • and multilingual educational resources.

CTApp also contributed to increasing awareness about the importance of computational thinking and coding skills within schools and educational institutions across Europe.

Our Role & Contribution

As project partner, INNOVA played a key role in research, quality management, dissemination, and educational content development activities throughout the project lifecycle.

INNOVA’s contributions included:

  • conducting a national desk research on computational thinking and serious gaming in Italian schools,
  • interviewing teachers and distributing questionnaires to students,
  • supporting the development and evaluation of computational thinking questions and educational scenarios,
  • drafting Chapter 1 of the Teachers’ Guide on Computational Thinking,
  • preparing quality assurance and risk management plans,
  • translating educational materials and promotional content into Italian,
  • organizing dissemination and awareness-raising activities in Italy,
  • contributing to evaluation tools and project monitoring activities,
  • supporting workshops, webinars, and multiplier events.

INNOVA also contributed to communication and outreach activities through institutional videos, online dissemination campaigns, and engagement with schools and educational stakeholders.

The Challenge

Digital transformation is rapidly changing education systems and labour market demands, making computational thinking and problem-solving essential skills for future generations. However, many schools still face challenges such as:

  • limited access to innovative digital learning methodologies,
  • lack of computational thinking integration in curricula,
  • insufficient teacher training on coding and serious gaming approaches,
  • low student engagement in traditional learning environments,
  • difficulties in developing problem-solving skills among students.

CTApp was created to address these challenges by providing engaging, accessible, and interactive educational tools capable of supporting both teachers and students in the development of computational thinking competencies.

Our Role & Contribution

As project coordinator, INNOVA leads the strategic direction, implementation, and stakeholder engagement across a consortium of 7 European innovation organizations.

We bring our expertise in: Innovation ecosystem development, Technology transfer and startup support, and EU project coordination and policy alignment.

Our mission is to ensure that regional ecosystems are not isolated, but interconnected, collaborative, and future-ready.

The Challenge

European innovation ecosystems often operate in fragmented ways, leading to: Limited cross-border collaboration, Gaps in innovation support systems, and Uneven access to funding and opportunities. 

EMPOWEREDbyNEIA addresses these challenges by creating a structured, inclusive, and bottom-up approach to innovation, ensuring that regions can align with the New European Innovation Agenda and work towards shared goals.
