Rome is accelerating its ambition to become one of Europe’s leading centers for innovation and advanced technology. During a recent visit to the Tecnopolo Tiburtino, Mayor Roberto Gualtieri reaffirmed the strategic importance of the district as a driver of technological development, research excellence, and industrial growth.

The visit showcased some of the area’s most advanced innovation assets, including Thales Alenia Space’s Space Smart Factory, a cutting-edge satellite manufacturing facility, and Aruba’s Hyper Cloud Data Center, a key infrastructure supporting digital transformation, cloud computing, and data management.

Beyond celebrating the achievements already present within the Tecnopolo, the visit also brought significant announcements for the future of Rome’s innovation ecosystem.

Among the most notable developments is the planned creation of a dedicated Metro B station serving the Tecnopolo Tiburtino. The new transport infrastructure is expected to improve accessibility for researchers, entrepreneurs, students, and companies operating within the district, further strengthening its attractiveness as a hub for innovation and investment.

Equally important was the positive reception of the Italian Government’s proposed €1 billion investment in artificial intelligence and quantum technologies. The initiative represents a major opportunity to reinforce Italy’s competitiveness in strategic deep-tech sectors and could generate new opportunities for research institutions, startups, technology transfer organizations, and innovative enterprises across the country.

Today, the Tecnopolo Tiburtino hosts more than 150 companies active in sectors such as aerospace, ICT, life sciences, green technologies, and advanced manufacturing. The combination of world-class industrial facilities, growing digital infrastructure, and strong public investment confirms the district’s role as a cornerstone of Rome’s innovation ecosystem.

As Italy continues to invest in emerging technologies and advanced research, the Tecnopolo Tiburtino stands as a powerful example of how collaboration between industry, academia, and public institutions can drive sustainable economic growth and technological leadership.

Since October 2022 INNOVA, together with the companies HSPI and Blockchain Italia, has been qualified as service provider within the TrackIT Blockchain project promoted and financed by ICE – Italian Trade Agency. The project is addressing Italian SMEs and provides traceability services for Made in Italy products through the blockchain technology.
The goal is to encourage the expansion of Italian SMEs on foreign markets by countering the Italian Sounding phenomenon, increasing the level of transparency in communication with the final consumer and enhancing the uniqueness of Made in Italy products.
All this through the blockchain technology that allows the tracking of the product along the production chain highlighting the quality and origin of the raw materials, production phases, certification processes, history of the individual products and uniqueness.
A product traced on the blockchain acquires value and credibility, and therefore a competitive advantage, increasing the confidence of the final consumer who, by scanning a QR code, can access precise, transparent and reliable information on the product and the production process. An advantageous strategy for companies – as stated by Antonella Vulcano Director of INNOVA in a recent article on the platform of the ICE Agency “Train2Markets” – to enhance the values connected to the territory and the culture of origin and provide an integrated storytelling of all the steps production and product certifications.
Within the initiative, INNOVA, HSPI and Blockchain Italia offer a customised support including:
• a mapping of the single supply chain
• a blockchain traceability system
• a user interface aimed at foreign consumers
• a training activity on the use of blockchain technology to enhance the offer on international markets.
Business services are free for the first 18 months.
Interested companies can apply for participation by filling a form available on the initiative website.

In August 2023 INNOVA has been awarded as coordinator of the EMPOWERED by NEIA new project under the Horizon Europe framework. The initiative brings together a team of stakeholders from 7 EU countries (Italy, Austria, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Estonia) with the ambition to engage in a process of peer mutual learning and cooperation and support Clean Tech for Sustainable Development. Based on an in-depth analysis of strengths, weaknesses, challenges and gaps in the ecosystems they represent, the EMPOWERED by NEIA team members strive to bring together the members of the innovation ecosystems they represent as active stakeholders in bottom-up policy-making activities tailored to their needs. Through an Entrepreneurial Discovery process, the aim is to stimulate a participative process that will allow to identify the best innovation opportunities in each ecosystem and align them with the ones of the peers. The results of the Entrepreneurial Discovery run locally by each partner will represent the foundation of Action Plans, elaborated according to the European Entrepreneurial Region approach, to strengthen the collaboration between the Regional European Innovation Ecosystems. These plans will be back up with collaboration and project ideas for which public and private funding will be sought.
